Welcome back to another episode of UNCAGED, the official podcast of The New York Asian Film Festival. This episode focuses on the Korean gonzo-comedy, "Killing Romance," which was the opening night film of NYAFF 2023. Festival director, Sam Jamier, is joined by NYAFF regular, director Lee Won-suk, and actor Lee Sun-kyun for a lively discussion about the film.

Described as "a love story, a musical, a murder plot and a million things in between," "Killing Romance" follows a former celebrity as she teams up with her teenage super-fan neighbor in an attempt to escape her toxic marriage to a cartoonishly villainous real estate mogul. A series of horrific and hilarious events unfold, as the two devise an ill-advised plot to kill the monstrous megalomaniac and reclaim the protagonist’s freedom.

With its mashup of genres, outrageous characters, and irreverent storytelling, "Killing Romance" has become a must-see international cult hit. The film also highlights serious social issues, such as domestic violence, while thematically balancing vibrant musical numbers and a charismatic cast, which include actress Lee Hanee, the recipient of NYAFF’s 2023 Best from the East award.
