'Farewell My Concubine': The Lifelong Journey

NYAFF festival director Sam Jamier weighs in on the 1993 Chinese masterpiece, Farewell My Concubine, and why it is still such an incredible cultural phenomenon to this day.

From its battle against censorship and controversy to its triumphant rise as an arthouse sensation and Palme d’Or co-winner to the director’s cinematic quest for atonement, there’s more to this story than meets the eye.

This glorious 4K restoration is in its uncut and complete 171-minute version as director Chen Kaige envisioned it.

The late great Leslie Cheung’s heart-wrenching performance also emerges as a deep, universal meditation on identity, the roles we play, and the elusive nature of reality. Today marks the anniversary of Cheung’s passing, a moment that invites us to pause and reflect on the incredible journey he had through life and the movies.
