Thank you for joining us on another exciting episode of UNCAGED, the official podcast of The New York Asian Film Festival. This episode centers on the groundbreaking Japanese film, "Egoist," an LGBTQ+ love story directed by Daishi Matsunaga. NYAFF programmer Karen Severns is joined by the filmmaker and one of the film’s stars, Ryohei Suzuki in an engaging conversation about approaching sensitive narratives and creating authentic relationships onscreen.

"Egoist" had its world premiere at the 2022 Tokyo International Film Festival and will be theatrically released in North America by Strand Releasing. The film follows the love story between a wealthy magazine editor and his personal trainer, as family obligations and unforeseen circumstances influence their romance in unexpected ways. “Egoist'' is further distinguished by its delicate humanist depiction of gay and maternal relationships, sidestepping melodrama for naturalistic storytelling.

Director Daishi Matsunaga and actor Ryhoei Suzuki highlight the universal nature of a LGBTQ+ love story with candid sensitivity, bringing to life a bold new narrative not commonly seen in Japanese cinema.
