Welcome to the first episode of UNCAGED, the official podcast of The New York Asian Film Festival. This episode features the Q&A with the director and stars of the Hong Kong horror film, "Back Home," from its world premiere on July 25, 2023 at Film at Lincoln Center.
"Back Home" follows a young emigre named Heung Wing on his journey from Canada back to his childhood home in Hong Kong after his mother’s suicide attempt leaves her in a coma. Haunted by supernatural forces and a traumatic upbringing, Wing’s sanity gradually deteriorates against a backdrop of ambiguous paranoia. With the theatrical talents of performing artist, Anson Kong (member of the Hong Kong group, Mirror) , and internationally renowned actress, Bai Ling ("Dumplings"), not to mention phantasmagorically creepy genre tropes, "Back Home" is a striking feature debut by writer Nate Ki, replete with baroque portrayals of lost innocence and troubled psyches.
While Hong Kong is no stranger to the expansive environment of cinematic horror, Ki hopes to reinterpret classic horror conventions to highlight social issues and emphasize metaphysical themes for younger audiences. "Back Home" has earned praise for its methodical blending of genres, blending the structure of a family melodrama with supernatural elements to further explore the protagonist’s fraught relationship with his mother.
